Vocal coaching in Solihull

Vocal coaching
in Solihull.

Singing is a physical skill, and that is the thing most people do not expect. Breath, support, placement and stamina are trainable in the same way a dancer's turnout is trainable — which means a child who has been told they cannot sing has usually just never been taught how.

We run vocal coaching in junior and senior groups, so the material and the technical demand match the voice in the room.

Technique before repertoire

The work starts with breath and support, because almost every problem a young singer has — running out of air, going flat under pressure, a voice that tires after two songs — traces back there. From there it moves to placement, range and control, and finally to interpretation, which is where a technically correct performance becomes one worth listening to.

Young voices are also still changing, and pushing them the wrong way at the wrong time causes lasting damage. Repertoire is chosen around where a voice actually is rather than where a student would like it to be.

Auditions and performance

For students heading toward auditions — school productions, drama schools, our own senior musical theatre group — coaching covers the practical craft of it: choosing material that shows a voice honestly, preparing a cut, and handling the two minutes in a room with a panel.

Everyone performs at the annual show regardless, which is the part that turns technique into confidence.

Group coaching, and going further

The junior and senior classes are group sessions, which is deliberate — singing in front of other people is the skill, and a group is where it gets practised weekly rather than once a term. Harmony work is only possible in a group anyway.

Students who want individual attention on top of that usually pair it with private coaching.

Questions

What parents usually ask.

  • What age can children start vocal coaching?
Five, in the junior group, with a senior group for older students. Both age ranges are shown against the classes above.
  • My child has been told they can't sing. Is it worth trying?
Almost always. Singing is a trainable physical skill — breath, support, placement and stamina — and most people who believe they cannot sing have simply never been taught how.
  • Is this group coaching or one-to-one?
The junior and senior classes are group sessions, which is deliberate: singing in front of other people is the skill being built, and harmony work needs a group. Individual coaching can be arranged alongside.
  • Do you prepare students for auditions?
Yes — choosing material that shows a voice honestly, preparing a cut, and handling the audition room itself.
  • Where does vocal coaching run in Solihull?
Both the junior and senior groups run at The Edge, our studio inside Alderbrook School on Blossomfield Road, B91 1SN — and they sit next to each other in the evening, so siblings in different groups need one trip.
